Why do we need native plant material? (native plants and seeds)

Education

As I look around the landscape I see so few native plants. The native flora that used to blanket the hillsides (pre-Euro settlement) is all but replaced with turf, invasive and non native species and the built out environment. It’s amazing the native fauna (animals) has hung on this long. But it’s time may have come, it’s going fast. A study out of the National Academy of Sciences released a report (March 2025) that 22% of the pollinators in the U.S. are at an elevated risk of extinction. EXTINCTION. That’s forever. And what comes after that is scary.

Native animals CANNOT survive without native plants. That’s why we need them. That’s why Go Native! perennials grows them.

If you want to buy native plants where do you go? There are some nurseries - but definitely not enough plants to support and rebuild populations of pollinators. We are starting to grow in larger quantities to help build a supply chain.

Do you want to help?

  1. Before you buy Spring annuals for your garden think again.

  2. Buy native plants.

  3. Become a native plant scout (it’s a program in development through the Mid-Atlantic Regional Seed Bank)

  4. Tell your children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors about native vegetation and how it has to be their future.
