Why are native plants important cover – even in the winter?

Blog

In dense meadows of wildflowers, sedges and grasses there are remaining foliage, stems, and fallen leaves that cover the ground and slow runoff year-round.  Their roots open compacted ground and allow water to seep downward.  And their stalks provide homes for insects and small animals to lay eggs or nestle in and sleep. Please leave the stalks in place until warm springtime hits so you give them time to wake up!

And of course, before the plants go dormant, they give the world seeds. Life!
